USA TODAY: THE NATION’S NEWSPAPER, SECTION D: LIFE, THURSDAY OCTOBER 3,1995
Yolk isn’t brand-spanking new. But it hasn’t reached its first birthday yet, either. The L.A.-based bi-monthly is geared to young, hip Asian-Americans or “GenerAsian X.” “Yolk stands for pride in the color of our skin,” explains editor Larry Tazuma. “Yolk symbolizes the `Yellow is Beautiful’ movement.” Although it does favor GenerAsian profiles (Mortal Kombat actor Robin Shou, Single Guy’s Ming-Na-Wen), Yolk is primarily a youth-oriented pop culture magazine indulging in Gen X nostalgia kitsch, with articles on Japanese animated cartoons like Speed Racer, Godzilla movies and Hello Kitty products: Purses and backpacks emblazoned with the Japanese-imported little white kitten with a red bow have become a big hit with ravers.
